Statistics South Africa

The design of the new Stats SA campus in Tshwane reflects the Department’s role in gathering, processing, and communicating data through a legible architectural language inspired by statistics and the ridged local landscape. A central drum at the northern entrance symbolizes the heart of the Department and serves as a gathering point, its beaded mesh referencing the 77,000-year-old Tally Stone and African beadwork to celebrate the history and cultural context of counting and recording information. The campus layout, expressed through the Drum and five “Fingers” extending from a central Atrium Street, integrates key data functions while connecting the site, city, and people. Supporting buildings, including the DPC and Heritage Court, echo this architectural language, reinforcing integration, collaboration, and the Department’s mission in a contemporary and culturally resonant form.
