Witklipfontein Lodge is designed to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings, with a green roof that tucks the house beneath the hillside. The architecture combines traditional vernacular techniques with modern minimalism, offering panoramic views that connect indoors and outdoors. Thick stone and earth walls provide thermal mass to stabilise temperatures without air-conditioning, ideal for the Free State’s wide daily temperature swings. Sustainability features include cement-free construction, recycled granite floors, natural pools, solar power, water treatment systems, and protective shutters regulating heat. The raw, natural materials create a warm, grounding atmosphere, making the lodge a showcase of green building that revives forgotten techniques in a contemporary way.
