AISJ Aquatic Centre
The AISJ Aquatic Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg, completed around 2012, is a 1,400 m² facility housing a six-lane, 25‑metre pool, a shallow teaching pool, changing areas, and support spaces. Designed by Flansburgh and GLH Architects, the building features a lightweight tubular steel roof structure with scissor-shaped rafters, allowing a visually elegant, column-free span over the pools. Its pavilion-like design uses natural daylight, operable louvers, and fabric panels to control light and ventilation, while local stone and a restrained color palette create a welcoming indoor environment. The centre responds to Johannesburg’s climate, incorporates solar hot-water systems, and has been recognized for innovative steel construction, combining sustainability, structural ingenuity, and a high-quality aquatic experience.
